The Champion - 1915 – Black & White. Chaplin as a down and out is driven to a boxing career as a way of earning money to feed himself and his faithful bulldog. Boxing is a tough game for a little guy and Charlie discovers that by putting a horseshoe in one of his gloves he greatly improves his chances of winning! This tactic leads our hero, now named the ‘Jersey Mosquito’ to a championship fight and with the help of his trusted dog, Chaplin becomes The Champion. Between Showers - 1914 – Black & White. In this early Keystone Comedy, Chaplin finds a competitor for both an umbrella and a girl. The two ‘fatuous adorers’ partake in many efforts to out do each other to earn the favour of the young lady and the use of the umbrella. This was quite an early film in Chaplin’s career and he demonstrates here that his trademark character is almost fully developed by this time. The Bank - 1915 – Black & White. Chaplin works in a bank, knows the combination to the vault and appears to be quite important – he is actually the janitor. Charlie believes a female colleague at the bank loves him, which is actually not the case. In a dream, our hero thwarts a bank robbery, rescues his true love and saves the day. He turns to kiss the beautiful girl and finds he has woken up and is actually kissing his mop! Mabel at the Wheel - 1914 – Black & White. In this Keystone Comedy, Chaplin plays the villain in car race (based on the Vanderbilt Cup). Charlie’s henchmen hold captive Mabel’s lover, a competitor in the race and she takes his place behind the wheel of his car. Despite the villains attempts to scupper her chances, Mabel goes on to win the race.
