As an itinerant violinist, Chaplin finds himself in competition with a German street band and loses the contest. He leaves and finds himself at a gypsy encampment playing his violin for a gypsy girl. The pair embark an a trip during which they come across an artist, the girl gets her portrait painted and the picture becomes famous. It turns out that the girl is not a gypsy after all and her real mother recognises her from the portrait, and comes to reclaim her. Charlie is resigned to losing the girl to which he has become fond but she in turn comes back for him and all ends happily for our hero.
