All three series of the 1970s ITV sitcom set in Norfolk during the Second World War. Three very different young women – Young lady Daphne Finch-Beauchamp (Marilyn Galsworthy), Cockney lass Jenny Dabb (Terese Stevens) and down-to-earth Jewish girl Shirley Bloom (Philippa Howell) - are sent to work as ‘Land Girls’ at Crabtree Farm, Norfolk, which is owned by the extremely tight farmer Tom Whitlow (John Stratton). The girls are there to replace the male farm labourers who have been sent off to fight for their country. The Womens Land Army volunteers find themselves sharing a fast education in agricultural work with quite a few mishaps and a little romance along the way. First screened in 1977, Backs to the Land features a memorable theme tune sung by Anne Shelton, one of Britain's most cherished wartime entertainers.
